Explanation of various types of saws, including saw shapes and blades, as well as information on the Firearms Control Law and how to care for saws.

Overview

I don't see many people who are scrutinizing the saws because I often hear that they are "cheap home improvement guys." However, it is very difficult to cut a tree at right angles to the grain, so at the very least, I want to choose a saw that suits my purpose.
(Well, it's okay if you use a popular saw that you see at camping...)

By the way, I wrote it assuming that it will be used at camp. Be aware that woodworking and carpentry are different things, so be careful.

about the law

I often see on the internet that "saw is not a sword law but a misdemeanor law." A saw is also a blade defined by the sword law.
Therefore, if the blade exceeds 6 cm, it can be seen as "a blade with a blade longer than 6 cm." It's not a blade, but a blade.

If the blade of the saw exceeds 6 cm, it is stipulated that "no one should carry this except for business or other legitimate reasons." If you are not able to prove to the police officer that you are "on the way to and from your job, camp, etc.", you will be violated and imprisoned or fined.

Although it is important to note that even if you are returning from camping, it seems that there are cases when you are not doing a legitimate reason, such as "when you are playing away from your way back" and doing other actions. When you carry a knife, I want you to go straight to it as much as possible."
This is the information I heard directly on July 20, 2020 from the Police Department, Living Environment Division, Fire and Sword Countermeasures Section.

I will give you a personal opinion at the end if you do not have a valid reason.

blade shape

Trees are fibrous, and the way the blade is attached depends on the cutting direction and thickness, and it is just difficult to cut if you do not use the saw that suits your purpose.
Saw blades that cut large branches have thin branches that make it difficult to cut, and thin branches are too short to cut thick branches.

pulling/pushing

Pulling saw

A pull saw is a shape that is mainly used in saws in Japan. It's like pulling and cutting.
Strictly speaking, it has been adopted in other countries such as Turkey, but it's okay if you remember to cut the Japanese saw.
The blade can be thinned because it can be cut with a light force.

Pressed Saw

The push saw is a saw-shaped saw that is mainly used in saws in the West.
Because there is a blade in the pushing direction, you can cut it by putting your weight on it. It is made thicker than a pull saw because it requires a lot of force.

Vertical/Horizontal/Ibarame/Universal

Vertical grinding

Vertical saw is a saw for cutting along the grain. In the olden days, I used to call it gagari.
In the camp, I mainly use ax and knife, so I rarely use vertical milling.
Imagine that each eye cuts fibers with a knife-like blade.

Sideways

Horizontal saw is a saw for cutting at right angles to the grain. It used to be called Edome.
This is definitely the case in the camp because it is often used to cut firewood into short pieces. Most single-edged saws are ground horizontally.
The image is such that the left and right eyes are alternated and the fiber is cut out with two blades.

Ibarame/Universal

Ibarame is a saw used to cut wood grain, which is also called diagonal grind or versatile. A blade with eyes for both vertical and horizontal grinding. It seems that it has a structure that makes it easy to scrap wood chips.

clam

A clam is a saw with a blade protruding outward. By cutting thicker than the blade width, the blade and the cutting surface do not come into contact with each other, and there is no catching or resistance and it is easy to cut.
Wood chips are easily scraped off, but a horizontal line peculiar to the clams enters the cut surface.
In the camp, the cleanliness of the cut surface is irrelevant, so I want to actively clam.

It seems that a manufacturer called Silky has achieved a sharpness and a beautiful cut surface with its own structure. For details, please refer to Official site.

coarse/fine

Sometimes I write rough or fine details, but there seems to be no such standard. It is said that it is only used generically in some parts.
The basics are rough when used in camping, and the fine details are for fine work such as work, and it is easy to cut thin branches.
Even if you look at the manufacturer's explanation, there are many things that can be cut into small details and there is no difference so much.

curve/curved saw

What is called a curved saw or curved blade saw with a curved blade part.
Because it's curled, the blade goes into the tree like it cuts into it, so it seems easy to cut.

double-edged saw

A double-edged saw is a saw with vertical and horizontal grinds on both sides of the blade.
Basically, it is used by carpenters when cutting in various directions. So the saws on the conifer cone that are made for camping are ground and fluffy.

folding saw

This is for use in camping. It's a foldable type. Some blades have replaceable blades, and the blade angle can be changed.
Because it is a portable item, it is often made thin and light.

wire saw

A saw that only looks like the blade of a chainsaw called a wire saw. Hold both ends and pull alternately to cut.
Portability is good, but be careful because it makes you tired and your hands hurt.
Many people use ropes at both ends to extend and use for cutting high branches.

other

Roughly I don't have any chance to use other types in the camp.

Bamboo saw: Saw for bamboo. Bamboo has a hard fiber and will damage the blade if you do not use a special material.

Nail saw: A saw that thins like a protruding dowel and cuts cleanly.

Double-handed saw: A saw that is used by two people, with one on each side.

ito saw: A saw for cutting a curve.

Grinding saw: Saw for cutting metal and plastic

Hand bent saw: A saw used to cut logs and thick wood. There seems to be something called a gun grip.

saw for camping

What is the best way to use it for the whole camp? I mean.
I'm going to go to any camp, but for the time being, it feels like the following.

  • lateral grinding
  • no clams or silky clams
  • folding saw

Is it like this?
Since I don't think that wood will be cut vertically with a saw, it's easier to cut than the beautiful cut.
There is a clam. Silky has its own name, so the name is “no clams”.
The shape is a folding saw. Or a saw that is as compact as a folding saw.

Speaking of blades, it is okay to cut commercially available firewood around 200mm. For 200 mm or less, you can throw away the easiness of cutting and choose storability (such as when you only cut twigs).
When cutting a fallen tree in the mountain instead of commercially available firewood, it is easy to have about 300 mm.
Be careful that the saw is not too big or small.

How to cut with a saw

I often hear it annoying at an angle of 30 degrees, but cutting firewood at a camp is different from cutting woodwork, so don't worry too much about it. I think it's good
Of course, people who are used to it will find it easiest to cut it, so that's OK.

Part 1: Put it on the table

Here may be the most important when using the saw in the camp. If you do not hold the firewood firmly, the firewood will shake with the saw and it will be difficult to cut it, so be careful.
The ideal place is a flat place so that the surface to be cut off floats in the air. Be careful not to lean against something and cut it off at an angle, because if the surface to be cut off is fixed, force will be applied to pinch the saw and it will be difficult to cut.

image photo

If you don't have anything to use as a base, you can support the firewood you don't use. It feels like a seesaw.
Because it is close to the ground, be careful not to hit the saw with the ground and damage the blade when you finish cutting.

Part 2: Fix it

If the wood is hard to move, step on it with your feet. If the wood is rolling, it is easier to cut it with your hands.
Of course, fix the side that does not drop.

Part 3: Make a cut

First, lightly push or pull to make a cut. If you try to cut the book suddenly, the saw will dance to the right and left, so make a slight cut once, and then carefully pull the saw a few times to make the cut deeper, taking care not to slip from the cut.

Part3: Book cutting

When the saw enters the firewood for a few millimeters, cut it from here. Hold the butt of the saw and pull it without force.
Because it is a pulling saw that does not use power, you need to put some effort into the hand of the person supporting the firewood to pull the saw (although there is some). It is quite difficult to cut with a light force because it depends on the habituation and the performance of the saw.
Let's move it so that it cuts completely from the head to the hips.

Part 4: Fold

It depends on the hardness and the thickness, so it depends on the firewood how much you cut it, but it is easy to fold it like a kit-cut when the sawtooth is more than half full.
You can hold both ends with your hands and put a force on the person who opens the cut with your knees open, or lean against something so that the wood is diagonal and step on it.
Be careful not to get injured as it may break when folded.

Remarks

Cutting wood with a saw is basically a difficult task. I'm trying to manually cut a sturdy object that is used in buildings and won't break even if it is rushed by a car. That's tough.
Let's cut it patiently, as some people are saying that it's cut normally, saying "I can't cut it at all."

saw care

About polishing that is said to be sharpening and regular beauty.

Daily care

If you take water and wood debris well, it will not rust soon (though it depends on the environment), so be sure to wipe it off.
Dissolve and remove the tar stains from silky silk Yaniclean and for rust preventionIron Guard There's also something out there, so maybe you can use that.
Personally, just wipe off the dirt with an air duster or towel, and occasionally it is 556 on the towel and polish the blade to prevent rust.
Be careful not to add rust preventive agent too much.

Please wrap it with rustproof paper to prevent rusting. There are some, but I don't think it's necessary to use a folding saw. It may be wrapped for long-term storage, but these days it doesn't rust.

If it rusts

If rust is generated, it can be sanded down.
First, apply lubricant to the sharpening area and sharpen with sandpaper No. 400-600. Since it is troublesome to remove polishing scratches, I often do it with number 600.
When the rust is deep, it is recommended that you apply wax to prevent the rust from spreading.
After scouring the rust to some extent, apply a candle wax over a wide area, and finally remove excess wax to finish.

Sharpening

It's a sharpening tool called a knife.
It is important to note that replaceable blade saws and hardened saw blades are not sharp. The blade is hard and the file loses, so basically the blade must be replaced.

The method is simple, one for each blade Set file Just sharpen with.
Fix the saw with a vise, apply the lubricant to the file and the blade, then sharpen the front and back of the blade 2 to 3 times, and if there is a good eye, also sharpen it.
I haven't done clams for a while, so I'll ask the craftsman...

about the law (if it doesn't have a valid reason)

A personal opinion as stated in the first section of the law, "If it is not a valid reason even if it is a camp return".
When I talked with the person in charge of the Metropolitan Police Department, I couldn't completely say "not applicable", so it was suspicious and dangerous in terms of location, time, action, appearance, clothes, and the number of blades and tools that I had. If it is considered, will it not apply? I thought.
You are in an unsafe place at midnight, there is a thunderstorm for you to see, when you get a job due to being notified, you are in a place where you do not go back and forth from the camp, and you have too many things.
So it's okay if you don't get suspicious and go around the camp on a way back to the roadside station or visit a friend's house? I wonder what.
*This is just a personal opinion.

Also, I have Silky Katana Boy 500 with a blade length of 50 cm and a total length of 1.1 m, and various things about that as well. I asked if it was okay, but when I said "Oh...", I got the approval of "It's okay for any reason, no matter what size".
However, I was told that "I can't say that this is all right, so don't carry it if you're worried about whether it's a valid reason", so be careful when carrying a squid cutlery.
I think it's more important for the owner of the blade to prove to the police that the justification is for the police to judge it against the law.

Another thing I often see is "I just forgot to take it out of the car".
It's meaningless because it's nothing but an excuse along with "I accidentally made a mistake on the accelerator and accelerator."
If you can't even manage it, you shouldn't have anything that can kill you.
