About Down Material image

Tidbits and notes on down materials.A must-read for campers, as they'll be in need of it for their shrugs and clothing in the winter!

Overview

I will write about this down material that many people do not know unexpectedly. People who have down jackets are a must read because they are more about down materials than they are about shrafs. It also applies to duvets. I'm going to the test.
However, since this is a campsite, it may be called "Downshraf" for convenience.

Yes, maybe it's probably not. If I say the information first, it's clear that it applies to "in-house developed down (like) material" system. I'm sorry. Since it is a down (like) material, I would like it to be applied in most cases.

Warmth of down

There are many people saying "down = warm" in the world, but I think that there are many people who do not know why the down is warm or not. What is it warming down

Feathers swelled by the warmth of the body contain air and create a layer of adiabatic air

That's the reason why many people disdain by the warmth of their body temperature.
Isn't there a lot of people who wear inner jackets and wear down jackets? The warmth of that body temperature is not transmitted, the feathers are compressed, and a sufficient heat insulation layer is not created.

Speaking of clothing, wool and sweaters also have a layer of air in the fibers to insulate them in the same way, but in the case of down, the feathers bulge at body temperature to create an air layer, which is different from wool and sweaters.
Another difference is that the feathers are crushed.
It doesn't really matter to down slacks, but when you wear a down duvet or inner down, lay a blanket on the duvet, put a heavy coat on the inner down, and crush the feathers It does not swell and this also reduces the effect of down by half.

The body temperature of birds seems to be around 37 degrees Celsius, so at that temperature, it seems that the feathers will swell and the down heat insulating effect will be exhibited.
Be careful if you have a low average body temperature.

Sensitive to water

As the title says, Down is sensitive to moisture. If you sweat and your feathers get wet, it won't swell and the heat insulation and heat insulation effects will diminish.
I think that mountaineers know because they have a detailed image of how to choose down and fleece.

Down when not moving (when not sweating)
Fleece when moving (when sweating)

That's right.
The fleece is fine, but the advantage is that the down is light and has a great heat insulation/insulation effect, so some people change into a light down during a break even during mountaineering? I don't know

When using a down jacket or shruff, wear an inner that absorbs and wicks sweat to prevent the down from getting wet with sweat.
People in cold regions don't wear sweaty clothes when they enter Downslav, but rather have dry sleepwear for sleeping.
When sleeping, not only sweat, but also the sweat and moisture that you had before entering the down shruff.

I also want to be careful when I am down raf: "rain and night dew" in addition to sweat.
If you go into a down slack with light clothes to convey your body temperature in the middle of winter, it may be fatal if you say that you get wet with rain and night dew.Tent rain measures Make sure b> is firm. (In this case, it is fatal even if it is not a down material.)
If it gets wet in the rain, it is not warm, so the down raf is not good, and the tent that rain enters is bad, so please do not blame the down raf.

How to fold

Folding down is very easy. Do not fold. only this.
Because the feathers are very weak, if you fold the same part every time, the damage will be accumulated only on the fold and the feathers will be ruined.
Therefore, you can squeeze down down rafts into the cover and push it.

Even if it becomes messy, it will recover immediately with body temperature, and if you take it out of the cover and leave it for a while before using it, it will gradually return to its original state.

review

Let's review the precautions for down materials.。

  • Do not wear
  • Do not crush the feathers
  • Do not bring in moisture
  • Do not wet
  • Do not fold

I wrote a lot but it's fun to see it like this.
Let's master downshraf, which is light and small and has excellent heat insulation and heat insulation.
